How It All Started...

In 1889, First Baptist Church began with just 19 charter members who gathered at the Presbyterian house of worship. Initially known as Madison Station Baptist Church, J. R. Casten served as the first pastor. Services were held in the Presbyterian Church until 1891 when a memorial gift enabled the purchase of land. In 1894, the church united with New Hope Baptist Church, which later became New Hope Madison Station Baptist Church.
Until 1926, pastors served part-time, and the church experienced limited growth. In 1944, tragedy struck when the church building burned, leading to a period of meeting with the Methodists. In 1949, construction began on a new building, and the church added a Fellowship Hall in 1952. Under the leadership of Rev. Billy McKay in 1967, the church built an activities building, further expanding its outreach.

Expanding The Vision...

In 1981, Dr. James Richardson became pastor, and the church experienced remarkable growth, leading to a name change to First Baptist Church of Madison. The church underwent extensive renovations and expansions, including a new sanctuary, education facilities, and a Christian Activities Center. The membership and Sunday School enrollment grew significantly, making it necessary to have two Sunday morning worship services. Dr. John A. Temple took the reins in 1993, continuing the church's growth trajectory. As of the 115th Anniversary Celebration, the church had approximately 2,700 members and a Sunday School enrollment of 2,400. From 2008 to 2021 Dr. Ronnie Falvey continued the expansion of the church to accommodate the growing Madison community, including the worship center, choir, and educational spaces. His passion for missions also led to an expansion of mission efforts, both locally and globally.
